This isn't new.  The German Bauhaus school of design influenced an entire
generation of architects and industrial designers.  They not only designed
buildings, but furniture and all manner of gadgets as well, all reflecting
the same influence.

There's a sort of feedback loop that occurs with popular culture.  When a
certain style is in vogue, the public will steer away from things that
don't fit the style, thus encouraging designers to follow along with
the crowd to an extent.  Of course there are exceptions, and they can
either become the trend-setters, or the Edsels of their day.

I can't help wondering how we and our children will view the current
design trends in 40 years.  Will they look as dated as the old
"Star Trek" series looks now?
