The Nude in art

We are stepping into a much larger topic than 3D with this topic, but
in an attempt to discuss it within this field, I offer the following:
It has been my (limited) experience in viewing 3D images that subject
matter is secondary to the basics of good photography and, most
importantly, the impact of perceiving the object (whatever it might be) in
3D. Now, as has been stated previously, personal taste will effect the
experience. I tend to be less impressed by average 3D photos of cars than
by average close-up 3D photos of plants, but happily, I am almost always
impressed by excellent 3D photos of either. I do not see why this rule
cannot apply to the nude, or any other topic, as well.
Now, having said that, I agree that there are common sense guidelines
about public displays of some artwork, but this is easily overcome by
preparing the audience for any 'extreme' imagery which may offend. I do
not think that ALL photography which includes the nude should be clumped
into one private showing, since the field is too large and includes
everything from classic figure studies to hardcore erotica. It also
includes everything from commercial 'Playboy'-style imagery to visual
statements which just so happen to incorporate rather strong bondage scenes
(I have no idea about the content of these convention slide shows...I'm
writing from the point of view of someone who works in a public art gallery
and is also an artist). If you are still with me on this, I am comparing
two different perspectives and reasons for making this imagery...one for a
sales perspective, the other to make a statement. Therefore, to clump the
two together does neither justice. Instead, it just perpetuates the idea
that the nude, in any form or context, is a taboo subject to be kept in
people's basements...not a valid source for artistic expression.
