I must confess to the fact that the first 3D thing I "found" years ago
was a green Stereopticon (Or however you prefer to spell it! =) ) and
went on a 6 month binge to find views... I now have about 75 or so that
I really enjoy, and looked thru about 10,000 to find them.
My observation: MANY, MANY 19th century stereo cards were cheap, ill-
conceived excuses to make some money. There are relatively few
well-made 3D stereo pairs from that period. (Kinda like TV today...)
The good part of all this is that because it became so tedious to
collect stereo views, I began to experiment, and make my own. I still
make stereo cards from all my 3D work, because it allows people to
easily enjoy the picture in 2D while waiting to see it in 3D. I am not
sure I could ever be convinced to dive back to the 19th century stuff,
when I can make good, crisp color pairs today. Just an opinion...
