Stereolfaction?!

Actually this is not as much of a joke as you might think.  There was an
article in a recent issue of "Natural History" magazine, I think it was,
that said that the reason snakes' tongues are forked is that this provides
directional cues as to where the scent of prey is located relative to the
snake's head.

Insect antennae work similarly.  That's why ants are able to make a pretty
straight-line trail towards a food source.
