RE: Cleaning Shutter Systems

I have cleaned my Kodak shutter system, and other shutters from a variety of antique
cameras using tri-chloro ethane and a sonicator bath. As I work in a research
laboratory, these items are readily available to me. This solvent may be difficult to
be obtained by the public. Tri-chloro ethane is one of the prefered solvents for
cleaning mass spectrometers, which need to be super clean (and especially free of
oils) for use in molecular analysis. Once out of the solvent, the shutter fails to
operate until it has completely dried! After that, it works perfectly. When I feel
that lubrication may be necessary, I have been using the newer Teflon based
lubricants where the vehicle evaporates after application. Although I have only a
short history of experience with these lubricants, to date there have been no
problems.
