You need to get out more. :-)
You are obviously not including Kodak's professional digital cameras in
your comments. These are a Nikon or Cannon 35mm SLR camera body with a
6 megapixel imaging element. That gives you 3060x2036 resolution at
better than 24bits, which is at least on the same order of magnitude as
film. This is an order of magnitude better than your typical "Apple Quick
Take" 640x480 digital camera, which is probably what you are thinking
of.
