stereoviews
On the subject of 19th century stereoviews, I don't have any data to
prove this, but I feel that stereo photographers, at least many,
photographed e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. It's astonishing what some local
stereo artists documented in their community. They covered every
event, building, parade, odd rock, industry, tourist attraction,
tallest corn, shortest horse, anything that might sell a few views.
Single lens photographers seldom ventured from their studios, with
exceptions, of course. Post card photographers also covered every
possible subject from about 1904 to WW2. Without these two formats,
stereoviews and postcards, we would have much less history to write
today. As for what to photograph today, as a rare post card dealer,
I can tell you what collectors pay the most for today. Street
scenes, the busier the better. Occupationals. Events. Transportation.
The odd or unusual. The same goes for stereos, doesn't it? If you
want to be a hero in a hundred years, take stereos of your downtown,
every store-front, and do it every 5 or 10 years.
