Cleaning solvents

Thanks to Peter Eggleston for pointing out an important fact that I should have
mentioned in my earlier post on using tri-chloro ethane as a solvent for cleaning
shutter systems. All organic solvents, be it tri-chloro ethane, benzene, naptha,
etc., or chemicals used in the development of slides or prints, or any other
"chemical" should always be handled with care. Wear latex or vinyl gloves and take
spill precautions. If you can smell the chemical you need better ventilation or
possibly even a mask. In addition, re-use and recycle the solvents, they should not
be disposed into the water sewer system. Avoid exposures to children and pets. If you
are not familiar with the potential hazards of a given chemical, call the
manufacturer and request an "MSDS" which is a Material Safety Data Sheet. It will
provide you with all the information necessary for safety and handling, and potential
toxicities. All of the mention chemicals in past digests on cleaning shutters,
lenses, camera bodies, developing of film, etc (excluding pure water, of course).
can, with sufficient exposure, cause various dermatologic disorders, or, may have
potential for serious systemic toxicities. This is not meant to make anyone paranoid
about everything, just safety aware. The final result?...(and link to 3D)... better
working 3D cameras, healthy photographers, and a clean environment for those
outstandinging 3D photographs. ALthough it is clearly apparent that photo-3d
participants are of a high order of intellect and intelligence, somethimes even those
of use who use these chemicals frequently may occasionally need a gentle reminder.

end of sermon for today. Thank you for listening. Now back to your regularly
scheduled program.
