Digital vs. scanning

It may not be valid to compare a scanner's element to the pickup in the
camera.  A camera grabs the entire frame at once, so the image resolution is
limited by that of the imaging chip.  A scanner has the leisure to move a
pinpoint sensor or a beam of light across the slide, line by line.  For
example, I've seen professional color scanners for newspaper production that
use a spinning drum like an old fax machine.
