scanning, digital

And now a word from our sponsor (the "original poster")...

Boy, do I feel silly. As numerous readers have pointed out (on-list and
off-list) - - there really is no point in comparing 3060 pixels horizontal
resolution from the DC50 vs. a very nominal 7200 pixels from a scanned
print, if my intent is to Webberize the result, 'cuz most users only browse
at 600 pixels across the screen anyhow. Thus a half-pair image needs to be
rendered at no more than 300 pixels horizontal. For my purposes, that sort
of renders [npi] the whole issue moot, along with all the discussion what is
and isn't in the ballpark (sorry, another baseball term!). It also moots
many (not all, don't flame me) of the data compression issues.

Of course, if your intent is not limited to html there are some real issues
out there - but I'll leave that field to them what knows something.

Thanks again, all, for your patience with a newbie.
