MTF

Popular Photography, May 1996, p.26, has pictures of oscilloscope traces
of slit images which they used to test lenses using MTF in 1971... the
corresponding slit images are also reproduced...

Will our resident experts please comment on these?

It appears that the closer to a "square wave" trace for the coarse slit
target and the higher the "spike" for the narrow slit target, the better the
lens.
However, while the first set of images has a sharper photo of the wide
slit target than for the third set, its narrow slit photo appears fuzzier
than the for the third set... the narrow slit oscilloscope *traces* indicate
the first set is the better lens... unfortunately, the wide slit trace
"shoulders" for the first test photos are cut off.

Is this some sort of contrast versus sharpness dynamic?

With my natural math talent approaching zero, these pictures help my
understanding of MTF... I think...
