3D & lens/film/print res

I said something in my previous post about APS and film resolution
requirements. It got me to thinking. You know, 3D is about as
tough as anything in resolution requirements. The only thing I
can think of that's close is a mural-size print. The reason is
that we 3Ders view from the center of perspective or thereabouts
whereas everyone else views from quite a bit farther out, making
lack of resolution not apparent. Consider the ordinary snapshooter.
He takes a picture with a 35 mm lens or a 50 mm lens and has it
printed on 4" x 6" paper and then he views it from 16". Since
the negative is 24 mm high, he should be viewing it from
(35/24)*4" = 5 7/8" or (50/24)*4" = 8 5/16" and _not_ from 16".
In other words, the snapshooter only needs about half the resolution
that a 3Der does.
You can check projected slides too. Here projector lens and screen
resolution come into play where enlarger and print paper came into
play in the previous example. If the slide is shot with a 35 mm
lens and projected onto a 4' wide screen, then the spectator should
sit 4' from the screen. I haven't seen this happen too often. 8-)
