Realist format and me # 3
It is clear that there are many ways to capture/create a stereoscopic
image and many ways to view it.
To go back to my first question: "What exactly is the Realist format?" It
seems to me that the answer has more to do with the presentation method
than the way that the image was captured. "Realist format" for me means
that the sterescopic image is recorded in a transparent medium (not
necessary slide film, could be negative too) and it is mounted in one frame
of the standard Realist outer frame dimensions so it can be viewed using
Realist-format viewers or projectors. Anything that could be presented
using this kind of hardware could be labeled "Realist-format" even though
the original image was captured using an SLR, was created by a computer, or
was copied from an 1860's stereo card. The size of the image is also
unimportant (4p to 8p) and it could even be a medium format slide cut and
mounted in a Realist mount.
The Realist-format is a standard used heavily today. Other "standards"
include the 2x2x2 which requires a totally differenet choice of hardware,
and various print formats, anaglyph, lenticular, etc.
Here are a few more questions: Are all methods for generation and
presentation of stereoscopic images equal? Are we allowed to have
preferences? Should we reveal those preferences? Are we allowed to have
opinions about which methods work well and which don't?
Of course, everyone is allowed to have an opinion and should be allowed to
express it and everyone should be allowed to chose whatever they like when
it comes to 3-d. My personal opinions and choices will follow... tomorrow.
