I spoke recently to someone at Virtual Max. I gather that they are primarily a
distributor and what they are doing is commissioning existing porn producers to
shoot an occasional video using the Toshiba alternate-field video system. They
then edit a stereo version AND create a "flat" version via electronic
conversion. In that way they can recoup expenses, which they probably couldn't
given the currently small number of alternate-field video fans. They were very
coy about how it was working out for them, but I gather that the 3D versions are
attaining a sort of underground success. Porn seems to often drive new
technologies--I suspect that the VCR market might not have survived its initial
doldrums if it hadn't been supported by porn videos in the first few years. I
wonder if this outfit will introduce an audience to 3D video who will then go on
and demand other kinds of 3D video entertainment?
