I grew up in Rome in the Seventies & early Eighties. I used to ride
my bike along the Erie Canal towpath out to Delta Dam and the aquaduct.
The canal was basically a swamp, overgrown with trees and filled with old
tires and other garbage. The aquaduct and the lock next to it were
crumbling and covered with broken beer bottles. I haven't been there
in 10-15 years, so I don't know if there's been any attempt at restoration.
The dam is still in use.
I have what looks like a homemade view from the Fifties of this site
(my sister found it at one of those mall antique shows in Syracuse) and
it doesn't look nearly as overgrown as I remember.
