Well, you could get two disposable cardboard cameras and some electrical
tape.  This actually works - somebody on this list described it about a year
ago, and I'm here to say it functions well with a little two-shutter-fingers
practice and a basically still subject.  If you're fanatic about coplanar
lenses, and wish to continue the school project approach, you can splint the
join with a popsicle stick or two.  Really.

No idea about availability in Ukraine (except this - Ukraine is a large and
varied country and availability is likely to vary regionally), however if
your friend is going a tad further north (Moscow) then all manner of fSU
stereo gear - but mostly Sputniks - are available readily in the tourist
shops, antique shops, and especially on the weekend at Ismailova Park.
Inspect carefully and haggle hard: caveat emptor, vui ponimaite?

By the by, they prefer "Ukraine" to "the Ukraine."
