I have a partner who has a cabin which uses propane light fixtures (in
fact, the whole place runs on propane - each fixture puts out the
equivalent of a 60 watt light bulb - the only exception is that it's
kind of hard to find a propane powered tv set :-).

We checked on the radioactive question on gas mantles (although I thought
I remembered something about barium as opposed to thorium - but I'm
probably wrong). Turns out that the radioactive component in the 
thread was eliminated (the manufacturers say) quite awhile ago. In any
case, the only potential problem was when the mantle was initially burned
to create the "glass" bulb - one should not breath the smoke thereby
produced...
