You know, Supercircuits (on the www) has a variety of dirt-cheap CCD cameras on PC boards. They're plenty small enough that you could mount them at the correct spacing (~65mm). They have video (and some also have audio) out. I don't think they stock much so you may have to wait for a boat to come in from Asia but the ones I bought for work perform well. They're in the 100 to 200 mA range at 9 to 15 volts. Goodly number of lines, also - approximates S, I think.
