Stereo Mounting

I have been taking stereo for less than a year, and although I am happy taking
the shots (I am currently using a Realist 3.5), I am still not completely
happy with the mounting. By this I don't mean alignments / stereo windows
etc. I mean the 'hardware' involved.

As a person who was not lead astray by others but only has himself to blame
I bought a secondhand Wray, worked out what to put in it (slide film), even
realised preprocessed film was not a good idea, then came to a grinding halt
when it came to mounting and viewing.

So I tracked down a well known UK outlet for stereo bits and pieces, got the
price list, got thoughly confused by aperture sizes and 'Realist format'
mounts and finally ended up mounting in 2 x 2inch Bonum plastic mount and
viewing with something similar to 2 slide viewers bolted together.

A few months later ...

After linking up with the Stereoscopic Society and the 3D Society and
lurking on this list I have come to realise that the majority of people
shooting stereo slide pairs are mounting in double aperture mounts.
Bearing this in mind I though I better have a look and see what I am
missing, so I got hold of a sampler pack of assorted double aperture mounts.

Frankly compared with the Bonum mounts, that I am still using which I find easy
to use (it seems nearly impossible to twist the chip and the horizontal
alignment is easily adjusted with the tool included) I think using these
bits of flimsy aluminium, card, sticky tape and tweezers would drive me
spare !

Now I realise there are good points and bad points to 2x2 as opposed
to Double Aperture -

  Double Aperture mounting is cheaper.
You are not going to lose one of the pair in double aperture mounting.
2x2 mounting seems to be a lot less messing that 'RL' mounting.
By the sound of it 'Realist format' hand viewers are easy to get and
are of better quality (Please comment !).
It seems to me 2x2 projection (i.e. two matched projectors) would be
easier to get hold of than 'Realist format' projectors (Please comment !)

Now what I am after is some comments on mounting / viewing / projecting
formats before I get too set in my ways.
