Lots of stuff on not needing a light-meter - but George, note the number
of "I"'s in the message - some of us poor slobs aren't good guessers,
especially myself. I don't mean in bright sunlight, but, say, on vacation
(recently in Italy, last year in Greece and Turkey), in conditions that
were:
Bright sunlight (cloudless sky), early morn - evening
      Partly cloudy " "
Heavy overcast, sometimes with rain (not in Greece, of course)
indoors in various churches, museums, most with skylights, during
various times of day and varying weather conditions

I made heavy use of my 1967 Gossen Luna Pro, and ended up with good
(exposure-wise) shots I doubt I'd have without the trusty meter. In other
words, start without exposure help if you want, but don't forgo use of an
inexpensive meter if you're having a problem, after suitable
experimentation, obtaining a correct exposure. Enough said, I return to
lurking.
