Greg-

Given the couple of examples of set ups you're interested in trying, I 
wonder how useful a flash meter would be for you... I think you'd be 
amazed at what they don't tell you, especially in multiflash setups...

On most of the shoots I've ever been involved with, the photogs will 
hardly bother with them except for the most basic ballparking. Seems as 
if their weapon of choice is a polaroid back or stand alone "pro" 
polaroid (w/f stops). That really gives you what you're looking for in 
terms of controlling contrast and lighting effects... they're not too 
expensive used...
