Twin Nikon N2000's / Shutter Release Sync?
- From: P3D Tim Smith <TSMITH@xxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: Twin Nikon N2000's / Shutter Release Sync?

To Photo-3D & Nikon lists:
I have two Nikon N2000's that I'm going to use for a twin slr stereo rig and
have a few questions about building a twin sync cable to fire both shutters
at the same time. A little about the cameras:
The N2000's are based on a 6 VDC chassis (4 x AAA's). It supports a couple
of programs modes, aperature priority and manual with TTL center weighted
metering. (In general a nice workhorse camera...used one for about a year
and just aquired a second one over the weekend).
Based on a few measurements I have made the following assumptions:
The remote release terminals have about 5.5 vdc across the terminals. One
of the terminals is at gorund while the other is at 5.5 vdc. Before
assuming that the two terminals were intended to be shorted together to
relase the shutter I inserted a peak storing ammeter and recorded about 450
microamperes (.45 milliamps). To keep the shutter open on BULB it was also
450 microamps consistantly...a reasonably safe assumption with that low of a
current.
Measuring the voltage across the terminal is pressed the on-camera release
to see if there was a direct parallel connection across the terminals...the
voltage didn't drop as expected telling me that there is some isolation
circuitry (a switching transistor, diode islation or even a simple gate).
I pulled the battereis out of the camera, measured resistance (with a DC
ohmmeter) and found it to be about 8 ohms and 11 ohms in reverse
polarity...telling me that there is either a diode (maybe a Zener?) or the
base of a transistor...or even a diode and coil of a small relay.
Before I spend alot of time building a small sync cable with pico-reed
relays I'd like some opinions on how I can slave both shutters. Of anyone
has an N2000 service manual for sale or loan I'd appreciate that too.
Thanks,
Tim Smith
