I agree.  And that's how I describe the impact of projected slides to
people who have never seen a 3D projection... "Imagine seeing depth out
of a flat screen..." (I avoid using the term "illusion" when it comes
to stereoscopic imaging which closer simulates reality than 2D imaging)

I do too and take advantage of it whenever possible during mounting.
But why and by whom is it "frowned upon"?  It is a good use of the 
3D medium, IMO.
