Have not tried that setup, in theory the gels will cause you to lose
definition due to their many minor flaws.  However I am looking at an
8x10 made of a fern (like the one in Expo 3D2), without glasses, and it
is plenty sharp at the plane of focus - veins and small features easily
visible.  I think lighting and subject will make a greater difference
than gel quality.
