Twin Nikon N2000's / Shutter Release Sync?

I assumed from my own measurements that shorting the contacts would not 
damage the camera but I was still unable to turn the meter on prior to 
firing the shutter.  I posed the same question to the Nikon list and found 
someone that hacked a release cable to find the following:

 - To turn on the meter, af, etc, the two contacts are
connected by a series of three diodes (total voltage
drop of more or less 3 volts)

 - To fire the camera, the cable shorts the two contacts of
the camera, so it's simple (and not dangerous to the camera)
to build a cable release.

He also claims that the three conductor connectors are available from 
Nikon-America for only $3.50 each...I hope to find out more later today.
