Stereo base in macro

A friend asked me today:

"Is the 1:30 stereobase rule mainly geared for use on subjects
within an average viewing range, such as 3ft to 20ft, or is it meant to be
applied to macro subjects as well? The reason I ask is that I have
continually found a larger stereobase more beneficial for macro work, and
wonder if there was a specific curve which anyone has found to account for
this correction. In other words, is there another rule which takes over at
a certain subject distance."

On the same subject, I'd like to know if anyone has used the Leica
Stemar macro-stereo lens before? If so, I'm interested in knowing some
measurements from it (things like the size of the septum, distance between
lenses, etc...)

                                                  :-)jamie.
