John B. derived a fairly general equation a while back that
specifies the stereobase as a function of the taking lens focal
length & near & far distances in the scene, but I'm afraid I
can't dig it up. John?
It was derived under the assumption that the goal is to keep the
maximum on-film disparity below some critical value. As I
recall, it doesn't take the viewing situation into account. But
then, as we all know, these discussions of non-ortho situations
give John the heebie-jeebies & he only gives us these equations
out of a sense of civic duty. ;-)
