3D IN (not at) the MOVIES

I just caught a movie running on HBO this month called "Curly Sue",
which is a typical "adorable orphan/waif getting dad together with
reluctant woman and becoming family after they fall in love" type
movie.
However, one thing that really caught my eye was a scene where they
have snuck into a move (no money) and it's 3D! The entire audience is
wearing cardboard polarizer glasses, and doing the lean left/lean right
sort of movement in response to what is seen on the screen (which is NOT
seen). The soundtrack strongly suggests that the "movie" is a Roger
Rabbit type feature in 3D. In fact at one point, one of the characters
actually reaches out to touch something on the screen!
I fine it interesting that 3D has become such an icon ("Congo, Curly Sue")
where there really isn't any activity currently (outside IMAX) to actually
MAKE/SHOW 3D movies/comics on a widespread basis.
Slight technical problem with "Curly Sue" - they sneak into the
theater via a fire exit, but are able to secure glasses. In every
one I've attended, you got 'em in the lobby when they tore your
ticket. I thought it would have been a pretty funny "in joke" if they
had snuck into the theater but then couldn't view the feature because
they DIDN'T have 3D glasses - but that would have been pretty obscure :-)
THANKS
