*Current* 3D cameras cannot make those decisions for you. A "proper"
stereo digital camera with suitable processing behind it *could*. It
could measure distances (triangulate) to objects in the image, it could
measure max shift "on the fly". With the triangulation, it could know to
automatically close the interoccular. It could do a "autofocus" 3D
style to get the depth of field optimized. Etc. For technical aspects,
if you can think of rules on how to do it correctly, then one can likely
do it automatically at a cost that's inversely proportional to the technology
available and volume produced. As technology marches and interest (volume
potential goes up) the price point comes closer and closer to that which
would make the potential profits look good vs. the capital and risk that's
needed to be invested.

So imagine an autofocus 3D camera that among other things will either light
a little "back up" light to reduce foreground/background ratio -- or perhaps
it will auto-zoom/pan to eliminate the background. I've already got a
name for one unit: "Dimension Model-7 by Kodak". Marketeers like 7's. :-)

If the trend to 3D in computers doesn't fizzle, we should see these
at some time within the next couple decades or so.

I'm working on it ! ! ! ! !

P.S. - Now only if they could automate "content". Maybe an A.I. program
in the camera that does comparisons with great master-works and
displays a "quality quotient"? I can just see the arguments on this
mailing list then about how dumb or how useful that quotent is
with interesting anecdotal evidence thrown in. !!! :-)
