"Knack Knack" was shown in polarized 3D when it premiered at the Siggraph
conference (whatever year it was last in Boston, 1989?), and it was very
impressive. (The snowman character can be seen at Pixar's website, taking
the place of the "i" in the company name.) Observant viewers of "Toy Story"
may have noticed that on a bookshelf in one scene the titles were of earlier
Pixar efforts: "Tin Toy", "Luxo Jr.", "Red's Dream", as well as "Knick Knack".
As others have mentioned, the 3d motion script is probably still stored somewhere,
so a 3D re-issue is always a possibility, but only at the considerable cost of
re-rendering with whatever additional adjustments might be needed for proper
windowing.
3D movies with integrated real actors and state-of-the-art special effects would
be much more complicated and expensive, I think. Feasible, but it would be a
big-budget gamble.
