Report from Rochester, Friday night

  • Subject: Report from Rochester, Friday night

Today was the first official day of the convention. Things are currently
quite active in "room-hopping". Alexander Klein opened his room with an "@"
sign in the elevators, inviting all photo-3d members. In Joel Alper's room,
we saw Sam Smith's homemade contraptions, including a macro camera made with
two Nimslo lenses and pinhole apertures, and some slides of spiders taken
with the camera, and DDDalia is selling like mad in her room.

The slide shows in the Stereo Projection Theater were very mixed, and some
of them made me feel a lot better about my own photography. I guess I've
been spoiled by the quality of shows we get to see at our Stereo New England
meetings, but I was surprised by some of the poorly exposed and/or
improperly mounted slides people were willing to project for a presumably
discerning audience. And one or two shows, while technically OK, were
overlong and sorely in need of editing. Others were great: Shilo Teshima's
"Meet Shilo" is a gem -- short, witty, a few good slides that leave the
viewer wanting more. And I haven't yet had a chance to hear George
Themelis's impressionst of the Koehlers' anamorphic widescreen shows.
Knowing his preference for 5-perf over 7-perf, I can't help wondering what
he thought of these superwide slides.

We arrived here at 2:30AM this morning after a long drive, and it's almost
midnight as I'm typing this, so it's bedtime for me now, after I dial up and
send this. I've enjoyed meeting many photo-3d list members, and I'm hoping
to meet more later in the weekend.

[PS. Couldn't get the local access number in Rochester to work, so this is
going out Monday evening. Other slide shows during the weekend were
generally better. Some of the "show and tell" slides on Sunday afternoon
were better than some of the official program (and some of the show and tell
slides were totally unviewable -- I flipped up my polarized glasses during
one set, to avoid damaging my eyes).]
