3D in Utah, redux

|If you can't get to Grand Canyon because of the drought, you may
|want to try the national parks in Utah. Bryce Canyon and Zion
|Canyon are both spectacular. There is a little known State Park
|near Bryce Canyon known as Goblin Valley that has some very
|interesting rock formations--rock boulders standing on mud columns--
|that make good stereo shots.
|
|Except for the possiblity of hyper-stereo shots, I believe Grand
|Canyon to be less photogenic for 3d than either Bryce or Goblin
|because of the immense distances involved.
I'll second Zion and Bryce (in fact, Bryce is so spectacular that my
favorite 3d modeling program was named for it - it specializes in
building planets). I think some interesting things could be done
at Zion with the highway tunnels inside the rock cliff, but I don't
think there would be any way to do it - traffic would have to stop
for you to get a shot from one of the little "balconies" looking out
of the tunnel into the canyon (sorry if that doesn't make any
sense - you have to see the place to understand it). Goblin Valley
would be *very* interesting with the right lighting conditions.
And don't forget Bryce's twin - Cedar Breaks. It's on the other
side of the ridge from Bryce (and high! - over 10,000 feet). Being
on the West side of the ridge, it can be very senic around sunset.
One kind of bad thing, though. I have consistently met very strange
people (and not in a good way) at the rest stops along I-15
in Utah. If you use 'em, I'd say get in and out as fast as possible.
The people in the parks seem fine, though.
Elsewhere, there are big fires in Utah, Nevada and Colordo due to
the drought. I've not heard of any currently in Arizona. (hard to
burn down the grand canyon, anyway).
Speaking of the Grand Canyon, the last time I saw a "civilian" with
a Realist was there, about 5 years ago. A rather older gentleman
who looked around 70 or so was wearing one. I did not see any Realists
the most recent times I've been at Yellowstone, for example.
Of course, I lived in Flagstaff for 5 years and only got up to the
canyon twice - go figure...
THANKS
