I was recently hired by VRex as their director of photo and video content.
I, too, have been following the development of their "VR Surfer" glasses,
(occasinally with skepticism of my own). I asked our people to comment on
the issues which you have raised.

Images displayed on a computer screen are shuttered at 120 Hz, and should
show no flicker. A TV image, on the other hand, is shuttered at 60 Hz,
(like all other TV glasses), and will flicker if the subject matter has
large bright zones, or if the demonstration takes place under bright lights
or open windows. Ideally, these images should be viewed in a controlled
environment, such as a darkened room.

The glasses you saw (at NSA and/or Siggraph) are indeed hand assembled
'prototypes'. The actual production run has not yet begun. People here are
refining the problems of which you speak, before releasing them to the public.

My job is to create, select and edit material which will give the viewer a
fair chance to enjoy the stereoscopic experience with the fewest technical
distractions. The only material I can currently vouch for is an animation
called "Concerto in 3D", and the 'work print' of my own piece entitled
"Travels in Guatemala". If you saw these pieces, I'd be glad to discuss them.

I've only been at VRex for a few weeks, but I accepted the position based
upon the understanding that the company was working toward a satisfactory
resolution to the problems you have mentioned in your posting.

Sincerely,

Ray Hannisian
