|photos into very, very tiny strips and "paste" them side by side in a special
|manner against the lenticular material - or perhaps this is all done
|electronically - but is it something an amateur could do?

This is an interesting question I've been considering also. It looks to
me like if you have access to a reasonable scanner (say 1200dpi) and
photo quality printer (dye sub, probably) and could composite strips
electronically (via Photoshop for example) that it could be done. I've
just never found any place to come up with the lenticular plastic...
