Re: The problem with Pulfrich

Oh, I'm sure they have experienced it; they just don't care that what they are
describing and what they are selling are almost unrelated. There's just enough
of a nugget of truth to keep the ad from being actionable fraud. And it's scams
like that that give 3D a bad name. The Pulfrich effect exists, of course, and
under certain limited conditions it can produce a startlingly real and effective
3D illusion. The "bad news" is that phrase "under certain limited conditions."
The fact that virtually every film ever made has at least an occasional shot
that will trigger the Pulfrich effect makes it possible for the snake-oil
salesmen to legally release tapes like the Roller Coaster Thrills, which is just
an outdated TV special that was not shot with any consideration whatever of
trying to create Pulfrich shots, and for them to claim that the tape is "in 3D."
On the other hand, attempting to actually create a Pulfrich tape demonstrates
how impossible it really is. The soda commercial that was run during Super Bowl
a few years back was extraordinary because most commercials are non-stop motion
anyway, and the spot was carefully plotted out to maximize the effect. But those
hard- or soft-core porno tapes with the actors trapped on a huge merry-go-round
spinning out of control as they attempt to do their thing can leave a viewer
dizzy to the point of nausea!
