I have an old Weston meter with an incident light attachment called an
Invercone. It is supposed to be held next to the subject pointing toward
the camera. Thus I agree with Jamie.

As I've said before, incident light measurements sometimes work very
well for slides. With a through-the-lens metering camera, hold a gray
card at the subject facing where the camera will be, bring the camera
close and meter off the card. With my Minolta Maxxum I then pull out
the manual to find out how to lock the reading, during which time the
subject either wilts or walks away in disgust, depending on whether it's
flora or fauna.
