Just a point of clarification... no spot meter gives a correct _average_
reading unless it is reading an 18% grey or equivalent.

A spot meter will read any reflectance accurately, but it will read it
as if it were 18% grey. It is then up to the shooter to place the value
where he or she wants it within the contrast range of the film. (ie "I
want this flesh tone one stop above 18% grey,", or "I want this shadow
three stops down from 18% grey," etc.)
