My VM story...part 1

Thank you for all the kind comments on my MANDATE OF HEAVEN reel,
now, by popular demand, here is the story behind it:
Part 1: "Would it 'reel'y ever happen?"
I have been pitching the idea of making a VM reel to the Art Gallery
of Greater Victoria (where I work) for over two years. I found an
interested ear with the curator of Asian Art, Barry Till, for whom I was
already doing 2D catalogue photography. As a sort of prototype, I made a
handmade edition of reels on the gallery's unique Shinto Shrine, each reel
in a folder which described the iconography and history of Shinto. This
was my successful first attempt at demonstrating the educational
possibilities of the VM reel, and also sparked some interest with others in
the gallery.
When the plans began for a major exhibit of the gallery's Chinese
collection, I introduced the idea of making a commercial reel to accompany
the catalogue. Unfortunately, the funding had not been secured yet, so the
whole project would have to wait. In the meantime, I did the photography
for another VM proposal: a reel on Samurai Armour. It was actually a good
thing that I did because an important representative of the Hongkong Bank
of Canada, (who we were hoping would help finance the Chinese exhibit!)
dropped by to speak with Barry and I had a chance to show him some of the
Samurai images. His first response when he looked into the (Dr.T modified)
Red Button viewer was a thunderous "WOW!". I explained how I'd like to
make a reel for the Chinese exhibit (positive thinking...strike while the
iron's hot!), and he instantly approved. A few weeks later the word came
in to proceed with the exhibit, the catalogue, AND the reel! Time was not
on our side...I would have to complete the 3D photography within one week
and the 2D photography (over 300 objects!) in only three weeks.
Up next...Part two: "The financial hell"
:-)jamie.
