My VM story...part three

VM story continued...
Part three: "The photography"
I wanted to make a distinct environment for each of the Chinese
artifacts, instead of simply a plain backdrop, so chose elaborate textiles
from the appropriate dynasties. The majority of time was 'sculpting' these
textiles into interesting landscapes to highlight the objects sitting on
them. Obviously this technique was successful since everyone who has seen
the reel has commented on how the textiles draw you into close study of
each frame, as well as giving more information on the distinct patterns and
colors of Chinese art.
The images were made using a single Nikon FM2 and a 60mm Macro lens
on a geared slide bar. The lighting was two Speedotron Blackline studio
flash heads with either silver umbrellas or large pieces of tissue to
create a 'soft box' effect. Exposure was calculated, as I have for the
past 11 years, with a Gossen meter and the diffuser pointed towards the key
light (checking, of course, that the secondary light is the desired level).
The stereo base was calculated using the 1:30 rule, measuring from
the nearest part of the subject to the lens (not the film plane...for some
reason I found this to work better for me).
The images were mounted in RBT 'realist' size mounts (even though
TYCO places the images into their own special mounts for making the
internegs).
