I personally never thought of the Realist camera as a poor
performer myself. It's true I didn't realize how good a
performer it is compared to alot of snapshot cameras.
My main complaints with it is that it's not a full frame
and that it cannot be developed readily at the corner developer.
I stand corrected on the slide developing but I prefer to take
mostly print stereo so that would be a problem with me.
I do take some 3d slides from time to time but not often.
Maybe when I progress I will get into it because I really
do like projection 3d for the size and realism. That is also
why I like full frame, for the bigger size. This would be
harder to achieve with 5-p Realist even with a viewer than
can magnify it enough. Now according to personal preferences
I think that bigger is better. I think anyone would agree
that given the all things being equal (quality, etc.) people
prefer bigger. Why do they sell projection TV sets? Why is
IMAX such a success? The 3d viewer that left me with the
biggest impression at Rochester was not the Realist-format
but a medium format with viewer. It was absolutely amazing and
it was displayed in some obscure table by some dealer. I
saw enough Red buttons, etcs. at the trade fair and they did
not compare. Now the experts in this group might argue about
the merits and quality of the grain of the film, etc. but all
I know is I know what I like when I see it.
In regards to beginners using a Realist, another reason why I
think they should wait is because it is much harder to mount
them compared to prints if you don't have the right tools at
hand and also you can free view prints, try that with a slide.
Also you can experiment to your hearts content with prints.
Cut them up and if you screw up who cares you can always get
another print made. Try that with slides. I know you can get
copies but its expensive. Try cropping slides, hard again.
Prints are more user freindly. All my 3d equipment such as
Pentax stereoadapter and lenticular cameras were originally
used to take print pictures for that reason. Don't get me
wrong thou I love slides ,viewing them and projecting 2d stuff.
I have had a slide projector for along time so I am not hostile
toward it. That's my 2 cents on this and have learned alot
from the past discussions.
