Actually you can get a nice stereo effect even though one is in b&w.
We have an old VHS video camera whose viewfinder is b&w, and by setting
the zoom just right I can see the real image with my left eye, and the
video image with my right eye, and catch most of the action in 3d.

The mind works wonders with incomplete/imperfect information.
