Several people here have advanced the theory, which seems quite sound to me,
that SIRDS were so popular because they were not a "passive" image. The viewer
had to WORK to see them, and could give him/herself a false sense of superiority
to friends who could not make them work. With 3D Museum, you look through the
viewer and there's the picture. wow. With a stereogram, you work and you try and
you adjust and you work some more, and suddenly ... THERE'S THE PICTURE!!!!!!!
WOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!!! That's why they were popular.
