Judging - what do clubs do?

I am soliciting ideas on judging stereo slides for an article in the
Detroit newsletter.  Detroit has 3 judges, picked the last minute.  
A judge must be a full member that does not have slides that night.  
That leads the what BobH said:  Those who take pictures are judged by 
those who dont!

What do other clubs do?  I know that in Chicago judges are competing
members and are awarded their average score for the night they were 
judges.  Oakland (?) has one judge.  How about the rest?
