Mike,
My wife Susan went to an all-image show this past Sunday, and bought some
contemporary color stereographs. While she was there, I was busy mounting
two of my most recent rolls of Realist-format slides, shot with a
Revere 33.
Even though the photographer was very skilled, with a great eye, and
the subjects were very interesting and colorful, compared to the slides
they just didn't have the *punch*. They are beautiful in their own
way, but it is definitely a much more subdued medium.
One of the slides is of a pair of tropical birds shot on Velvia with
flash fill, and the colors of their plummage (light green, deep yellows,
reds and purples) just knock your socks off in a Revere viewer with
Dr. T. halogen bulb. I have not seen a conventional print that could
reproduce that kind of color.
Susan collects stereographs, and I find many of them to be inspiring
in terms of my own stereography, looking at what compositions work
and which don't, etc. And of course as historical documentation
they're unbeatable, since they often depict ordinary people going
about their daily business, illustrating the fashions and period
trappings without artifice. I certainly don't look down on them.
I simply find the slide medium far more exciting. I'm sure I'm not
alone in this.
(Note to Velvia-haters: I cite that merely as an example. I love the
saturation of Velvia on appropriate subject matter, such as the above-
mentioned birds, for flowers, etc. But I also shoot Kodachrome and
Ektachrome, in various speeds, choosing the film I feel is appropriate
for the mood I'm looking for.)
