What he said. For me, I think the main factors are that (1) it's the
cheapest viewer that gives good results (because there are no cheap plastic
lenses to get in the way of the image) and is usable by a 3D novice (e.g.
my parents); and (2) it's flexible regarding the image format. I suppose
the same degree of flexibility is logically possible with a traditional
stereoscope, but how many subjects are there that would work well in an
image that was 3.5 inches wide by 24 inches tall?
The little booklet that comes with it explaining techniques for taking
stereo pictures with a regular camera is nice, too; it struck me as a
perfect way to get someone started in stereo. I gave one to my brother
last Xmas but alas, I don't think he's gotten hooked yet.
