For total control of the process, you could get a "slide duplicator"
attachment for an SLR - (I have seen many from my youth popping up
at photo-swap meets and I'm sure they should be available through
some of the used equipment vendors around)  They vary in complexity,
quality and price...

You could copy each picture and re-assemble the result in a new
mount.

A local "high-class" processing outfit near me has an elaborate
copy-stand sort of device set up for customer use.  There may not
be something like that near you, but it is another alternative
for your invaluable historical treasures.
