Well, now that the subject of 4D has come up, I'd like to recommend a very
entertaining book by Rudy Rucker called "The Fourth Dimension".  (Includes a
great recap of ideas from the book 'Flatland'.)

And, as for terminology, the graphics programmers here at VRex refer to 'Toy
Story' style images (called 3D in the computer industry) as "two and a half-D".
