I think the other GeorgeG is right in a way when he says lenses can't
increase contrast only hopefully not dimiish it more. Of course this is
what MTF is about..the lens reduces the scene, the film or other
recording medium reduces it more and the print or projection some more.
BUT there was a decided shift in design to increase apparent contrast
over resolution by adjusting the circle of confusion or airy disc type.
All modern cameras give snappy looking pictures that may have less
resolution on large blowup than their flarey ancestors.
In mentioning "rare earth" glasses that was a buzz word of the post WW2
world and even started by Kodak along with their LUMENIZED name for
coating. But soon all were on the band wagon with Schott glasses joining
the frey in Germany. BobH
