color photography never would have caught on. Despite the invention of
photography, painting is still a popular medium. We even find photographers
imitating painted art. All of the expressive forms mankind has ever found
retains a usefulness to us in some way. It is natural to seek stronger
parallels between our perception of the world around us and the accuracy of
our mediums of expression. However having a greater accuracy of
reconstruction such as 3D doesn't mean that we must use all of that accuracy
all the time. It is natural and artistic to abstract from reality as a way
of focusing the attention. Since the normal reality is flat 2D graphics, 3D
is itself an abstraction that focuses the attention. Naturally.  : -)
