Organizing slide collections

One of the most difficult things about taking a lot of slides is how to
organize them for storage, and be able to find them again. In our camera
club we had different methods. One person separated them into categories
they were to be entered in. The only problem with that method was that
some slides fit more than one category, and we had a rule that if a
slide didn't win it could be entered again, so a slide could get
separated from one group while it sat waiting in another. Other people
had complicated computer cataloging, with each slide assigned a number. A
computer entry had to be made for each one designating the various
categories, etc. and if a slide was out for interclub judging, an entry
had to be made about its whereabouts. Still other people threw them all
in a box and went through the box to select slides on camera club night.

Point well taken! Who has time to enter everything into the computer,
especially if you are very actively entering slides here and there. My
own method was strictly in date order. I'd be interested in hearing your
favorite methods for storing slides in your collection between shows.
